Everyone knows that God loves us. We hear people say it all the time. How much and why He loves us is a little more difficult to comprehend. The younger we understand the depth and completeness of His love, the more we will come to depend on Him when we are older and times are difficult. Share the message again - God loves you, no matter what, and here are some reasons why.
Make cards for each child who will be listening to the story (you can estimate how many kids will be there). On one side put “God loves you because you are…” then in larger or colored print put characteristics like
On the other side in large letters put
How many people here today are loved? Great! It looks like everybody. Who loves you? Your parents? Your grandparents? Your cousins? Your sister or brother? How about your friends? Do you love all of those people back?
Why do they love you? Have they ever told you? “I love you because…”
What is your favorite thing about yourself? What are you good at? What do you do in a way that no one else you know does?
It is wonderful to know that we are loved by so many people in our lives and to love ourselves for who we are. But, do you know who loves you even more than any of those people, including yourself? God.
God sees us for who we are and He knows how we are special, because He made us with lots of great qualities.
It says so, in the Bible, more than 100 different ways. Let me read a few verses for you. [Pick two or three below or bring some of your own.]
For God so loved the world, that He gave his one and only son. That whoever believes in Him shall not perish, but have eternal life.
The Lord is merciful and gracious, slow to anger and abounding in steadfast love.
1 John 4:19
We love because He first loved us.
Because you are precious in my eyes, and honored, and I love you, I give men in return for you, peoples in exchange for your life. Fear not, for I am with you; I will bring your offspring from the east, and from the west I will gather you.
The steadfast love of the Lord never ceases; his mercies never come to an end; they are new every morning; great is your faithfulness.
I am going to give each one of you a card today. I want you to take it home and keep it in a safe place. The next time you are feeling sad or lonely or you do something wrong and don’t know how to fix it, I want you to get out this card and read it.
Here is what mine says “God loves you because you are…” And on this side it says “patient”. If I turn it over, it says “HIS”. God loves my patience, but more than anything, He loves me because I am His. Just like your family loves you, because you belong to them, God loves us like children and He always will.
[Pass out one card for each child.]
God, thank you for loving us so much, no matter what happens. Help us to share your love with other people in our lives, so your love can grow through us. In your name we pray. Amen.
