Navigating In The Dark

Get Yourself Focused

Sometimes there is darkness in our lives and we can’t do anything to change it. It is important to know that there are ways besides sight to navigate through that darkness and that the Holy Spirit can guide us to the light, if we just ask for his help.

Just bring yourself!

Story

Have you ever walked into a dark room and tried to get to the other side, without turning the lights on? It’s not easy, is it? You don’t always know what’s in front of you. You could walk into something and hurt yourself or step on a toy and break it. There are times when you can’t turn on a light - maybe the electricity is out or a bulb is burnt out. So, you have to navigate in the dark.

Let’s close our eyes for just a minute. Now we are in darkness, but we can hear things. We can smell and touch. We probably shouldn’t put things in our mouths to taste them in the dark, but there are other ways that we can tell where we are and where we need to go. Maybe you could feel with your hands or listen for familiar sounds to guide you through the room?

Now open your eyes. What if you had a light with you, a flashlight or a candle? Maybe you could light a match for just a minute and get a quick look, then move around based on what you remember?

God made us with all kinds of skills to cope in situations where things are not going well. We have adrenalin that makes our heart go faster, when we are scared or in danger. That helps us think more clearly or run or have more strength than usual.   He also gave us a little voice inside called our conscience. It is our connection to the Holy Spirit and it guides us when we are making tough decisions or when we start to do something wrong.

There is darkness in all kinds of places. Sometimes life seems confusing or we make mistakes and don’t know how to fix them. Those can be dark places in our lives too. But we shouldn’t be afraid of the dark. That is where we often find miracles.

So the next time you are stuck in a dark place, whether it’s a room or a mood, close your eyes, use all of your senses and pray. The Holy Spirit will help you find the way.

Let us Pray…

Lord Jesus, help us to navigate through dark rooms and dark places where we sometimes have to go. There is always light in every situation, if we just look for it. Guide us to it each time. In your name we pray, Amen.
