The Christian experience is a little bit like a maze. We are searching for how to be more like Jesus. We want to follow His path, but sometimes we can't see the way to go very far ahead. We have to feel our way and turn at the right moment. That’s why it’s so helpful to have someone who has gone before and knows the path.
How many of you like to do puzzles? There are lots of different kinds of puzzles - jigsaw puzzles, crossword puzzles, find-the-hidden pictures, scramble and matches…and one of my favorites - mazes. Some mazes are pretty easy. You can just look at them and see the path, like this one. Others are really hard and have lots of different paths you can take. This one looks like it has more than one right answer, until you try it and then you realize there is only one path that works.
Being a Christian feels a little bit like being in a maze sometimes. We all want to follow Jesus, but at times we may not know what is right or it may seem like more than one way is good. We can’t always see ahead to know whether we will hit an obstacle or not. That’s why it is so important to ask for Jesus’ help. He’s done the maze before…and He got it right.
Whenever we have a decision to make or a problem that we don’t know how to solve, we can read about Jesus’ teachings in the Bible to help understand which way to go. You can treat each parable He told like a set of clues to how the maze of life works. For example, the Good Samaritan story talks about a man who was beaten by robbers and left at the side of the road. He was ignored by other people, including a priest, until a Samaritan passed by. The Samaritan helped the man and at the end of the story, Jesus said “Go and do likewise”. The directions for this part of the maze are: “If you see someone in need, don’t turn away, turn toward them and help them, no matter who they are.”
I brought a maze for each of you to take with you today. I hope you have fun doing it. If you do it in pencil, maybe you can erase it after you are finished and help someone else do the maze too?
Lord, it is so great to know that you have been through the maze of life before and understand the right path to take for each of us. Remind us to look to your lessons, when we get stuck or lost in the maze. You are amazing. In your name we pray, Amen.
